DUSTIN MARTIN
Richmond Football Club
2017 was a history-making year for Dustin Martin, with honours including the prestigious Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith Medal, AFL Coach's Player of the Year, Leigh Matthews Trophy, Ian Stewart Medal, Gary Ayres Award for best finals player, All-Australian selection and a second Best and Fairest for his club Richmond.
That year Dustin won the Brownlow medal with a record-breaking 36 votes and 11 best-on-ground performances also becoming the only player in AFL history to win both the Brownlow and Norm Smith Medals in the same season. The boy from regional Victoria became a legend.
It wouldn’t take long before he became a cultural icon.
Dustin ‘Dusty’ Martin just kept delivering on-field, to the delight of Richmond FC fans and to the astonishment of the national media. 2018 brought up his 200th game; he kicked what has been called “one of the greatest finals goals ever”; and was named in both Fox Footy and the Herald Sun’s All-Australian team.
In 2019 he returned to his Brownlow best form, finishing the season with his second Premiership with Richmond and again, the Norm Smith Medal for the best player in the Grand Final. He received the Gary Ayres Award for best finals player (for the second time) and his 23 Brownlow votes made him the No.1 all-time Brownlow votes winner for the Richmond Football Club, with 176.
Labelled as “the most devastating matchwinner in the competition” and “the greatest player of all time”, 2020 would take him to another level again. Named in his fourth All-Australian team, he polled the most Brownlow votes at Richmond, leading the mighty Tigers to a third Premiership victory with four goals and another best-on-ground performance. This made Dustin Martin the only player in AFL history to have won three Norm Smith Medals - a legacy unlikely to be matched.
As if to showcase his connection with fans, Dustin Martin’s AFL Merchandise and memorabilia has sold more than any other player in the history of the game. In 2019 he released the book ‘My story so far’ which became the No.1 selling sports book in Australia with over 30,000 sold.
Dustin Martin has become a powerful brand. An enigma with a huge following, his commercial partnerships have been widely successful for the brands he chooses to work with. Over the last few years iconic Australian label BONDS has partnered with Dustin for multiple apparel campaigns, citing his ability to engage a broad and loyal customer base; his continued work with the Kennedy Luxury Group, Voost vitamins, Archies and JEEP have also led to significant sales growth through his passion and energy.
Dusty‘s currency will live long after his sporting career.
